I had to write about my walk the other night. Renee and I walk every night and usually nothing exciting happens except for the occasional tumbleweed attack or terrorist sighting (see picture above--this is Renee's outerwear when the weather is cold. It helps protect her face from developing rosacea.) We wore the bright yellow safety vests that Scott brought home from work--partly to be funny, but also because we have had a few near misses with cars. Turned out to be one of those things. As we were walking home, a young kid (12 years old) approached us, walking his bike, and was speaking unclearly. We were pretty scared. Renee had her air horn ready to go and I got my cell phone out ready to use as he got closer. Turns out he was lost and when he saw us, he thought we were safety patrollers because of the yellow vests! This kid, Theland, had just moved into the basement of a house a few hours earlier. His mom was at work (working graveyard shift) and he had ridden his bike to the library to do his homework. Poor kid had been wandering around for a couple of hours in the pitch black, looking for a house he barely knew. He didn't know his address, phone number, the name of the people who owned the house or anything!!!! Scary!!! He did know his mom's cell phone number, which we called. She was able to tell us, "As you walk away from xxxxx, turn right and it's the second tan house." Once we got there, Theland still wasn't sure it was the right house and no one answered the door. He went around back and found his sister's bike and then knew it was the right house. YEAH!!!!!!!! Made us both cry and feel grateful that we had the vests on tonight, had a cell phone and that Theland found us and not someone else!
Square Foot Gardening? Not! How about Square Foot Nightmare!!! OK. I really miss Tom. I thought trying a square foot garden would be a fun project while Tom was gone, but so far, not so much. Well, actually, the garden may be fun, it's just all the sprinkler /preparation issues I've had to deal with on my own. Today I moved 3 sprinkler heads, connected a huge aparatus to our sprinkler system to get it ready for summer, turned the water on, dug out more grass, leveled the garden beds, moved the edging, shoveled rock, raked dirt, laid landscaping fabric, bought and hauled 24 cubic yards of dirt, made 3 trips to Home Depot, 1 to Arapahoe Acres, 1 to Split Rail Fencing and then tested the sprinkler system. ARGGGGGGHHH!!! I wanted to scream (okay, I actually did.) Water and dirt started bubbling up from the middle of the lawn. I have a leak in the system. I called several sprinkler guys (all Korean and couldn't speak English very well) and none of them can come for 2 weeks! (I think---did I mention they were hard to understand?) Anyway, tomorrow I will be digging another hole in my grass to see if I can locate the problem.
